IAJE Responds to Supreme Court Opinion in Trump v. CASA
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Today, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Trump v. CASA, limiting federal courts’ power to block nationwide policies. This ruling clears the way for efforts to undermine birthright citizenship — a right protected by the 14th Amendment — putting immigrant families in Mississippi and beyond at risk.
While the Court didn’t decide on the constitutionality of birthright citizenship, this decision allows harmful policies to proceed in some areas, threatening the futures of our children.
Below is a statement from Lorena Quiroz, Executive Director at the Immigrant Alliance for Justice and Equity (IAJE):
“Today’s Supreme Court decision strikes at the heart of what it means to belong here. By limiting the power of federal judges to block harmful policies nationwide, the Court has effectively given the Trump administration carte blanche to push its dangerous plan to roll back birthright citizenship. This isn’t just a legal issue — it’s a direct threat to our communities and children, and the basic idea that everyone born here deserves equal recognition under the law.
The 14th Amendment promises that ‘All persons born or naturalized in the United States… are citizens.’ That promise has given generations of immigrant families a sense of protection and belonging. Today’s decision puts that promise in jeopardy. It sends the message that even our most basic rights can be taken away for political reasons. When courts allow attacks on birthright citizenship to go unchecked, it erodes trust, safety, and the future of our communities and children.”
Let’s be clear: birthright citizenship isn’t just a legal idea — it’s a lifeline for millions facing detention, deportation, and exclusion every day. For IAJE, this fight is personal. We won’t stand by while our communities are targeted and vilified. We will stand firm and make sure everyone knows our communities and children won’t be ignored or pushed aside — because protecting their dignity, safety, and right to belong is at the heart of IAJE’s mission to support immigrant families across Mississippi.”
