IAJE’s Promotoras Program
Our Promotoras de Salud, or community health workers, are trusted community members who provide culturally appropriate services to their communities. In addition to being outreach workers, educators, and patient advocates, the IAJE promotoras provide PPE, coordinate food donations, and oversee the redistribution of much needed resources for their communities. This culturally and linguistically competent program focuses on serving Indigenous and Latino communities across Mississippi through a comprehensive health education approach.
These promotoras are the integral connection between community and the public healthcare system. IAJE promotoras operate under the CDC Community Health Worker model. We currently have promotoras in Morton, Laurel, Forest, Carthage, Canton, Jackson, Ridgeland, and Cleveland with plans to expand statewide.

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept,”
Program Overview
Our Promotoras are trained community experts who serve as vital bridges between healthcare systems and immigrant communities. Through our 10-month curriculum based on CDC-approved standards for Community Health Workers, participants gain skills in basic health screenings, interpretation, doula support, breastfeeding assistance, and rights-based advocacy.
Why Promotoras Matter
Community Health Workers are fundamental to addressing health disparities in immigrant communities. As trusted members of their neighborhoods, Promotoras provide culturally appropriate health education, connect community members to resources, and help IAJE identify and respond to local needs. This peer-to-peer approach creates sustainable health improvements while building community power.
